The Navagraham — the nine celestial planets — occupy a profound position in Hindu cosmology and Vedic astrology (Jyotish). Unlike personal deities approached for devotional relationship, the Navagrahas represent cosmic forces that govern the unfolding of karma — the patterns of cause and effect shaping each individual’s destiny through planetary movements.
The word Nava means nine and Graha means “that which grasps” — the celestial bodies whose subtle energetic influence shapes earthly conditions. In Hindu cosmological understanding, the nine grahas are not merely physical objects in space but are conscious divine intelligences, each presided over by a specific deity, each governing specific domains of human experience.
The Nine Planets and Their Domains

Lord of light, wisdom and the soul. Presided over by Shiva. Rules health, authority and spiritual illumination. Worship on Sunday.

Rahu: shadow planet of desire, ambition and sudden change. Ketu: shadow planet of liberation and past-life karma. Both require regular propitiation.
Why Navagraha Puja Matters
Vedic astrology teaches that the placement of the nine planets at the moment of birth creates a unique cosmic pattern — the birth chart (janma kundali) — describing the general karmic pattern of one’s life. Regular worship of the Navagrahas does not change the fundamental pattern of karma but changes the devotee’s relationship to it. By propitiating the nine planets through regular puja, devotees reduce the intensity of difficult planetary periods, cultivate the positive qualities of each planet, align conscious intention with the cosmic flow, and gradually lighten accumulated karma.
Navagraha Puja at Maha Rajyam Temple
At Maha Rajyam Temple, the Navagraha shrine receives daily worship. Devotees passing through difficult astrological periods — particularly the challenging Sade Sati (seven-and-a-half year period of Saturn) — frequently visit for relief and strengthening. Special Navagraha homam (sacred fire ceremony) is performed on auspicious occasions when major planetary transitions occur, invoking the divine intelligence of each planet through sacred woods, herbs, grains and mantras specific to each graha.
