The Great God of the Tamil People
Lord Murugan is the supreme deity of the Tamil people — the divine embodiment of the Tamil soul. The ancient Tamil Sangam literature, dating back over two thousand years, places Murugan as the presiding deity of the mountainous kurinji landscape, making his worship one of the oldest continuous religious traditions in human history.
In Malaysia, Lord Murugan is worshipped with extraordinary intensity. The annual Thaipusam festival at Batu Caves draws over one million devotees — one of the largest religious gatherings in the world. His six famous temples in Tamil Nadu are among the holiest pilgrimage sites in the Hindu world.
Birth from Shiva’s Sacred Fire
The gods were being tormented by the demon Soorapadman, who could only be destroyed by a being born of Shiva’s divine fire. The sparks of Shiva’s tapas fell into the sacred Saravana lake and six lotus flowers bloomed. Six divine children emerged, nursed by the six Krittika stars. Parvati held the six children — and they merged into one being with six faces and twelve arms: Murugan — Shanmukhan, the six-faced one.
The Divine Vel — Weapon of Wisdom
Murugan’s primary symbol is the Vel — a golden spear given by his mother Parvati. The Vel does not merely destroy; it penetrates illusion, cutting through maya to reveal ultimate truth. It represents divine wisdom in action — the sharp, precise intelligence that cuts through confusion and ignorance. When the Vel struck Soorapadman, it split him in two — one half becoming Murugan’s peacock vehicle, the other the rooster on his banner. Even the greatest demon, when destroyed by divine grace, is transformed rather than annihilated.
Murugan Teaches His Father — The Meaning of Om
Murugan challenged Lord Brahma and even Lord Shiva himself to explain the complete meaning of the sacred syllable Om. When none could fully answer, Murugan whispered the meaning to his own father Shiva. So moved was Shiva by his son’s profound understanding that he called him Swaminatha — “teacher of the Lord.” This is why Murugan is called the supreme guru — wisdom so deep it transcends even the creator gods.
Thaipusam — Malaysia’s Greatest Festival
Thaipusam is celebrated on the full moon of Thai month (January–February) when the moon is in Pushya nakshatra. In Malaysia, the procession at Batu Caves draws over one million devotees annually. Devotees carry the kavadi — elaborate decorated frames and in extreme acts of devotion, pierce themselves with silver needles — while in a state of divine trance. Medical observers consistently confirm that sincere devotees show minimal bleeding and extraordinary rapid healing, attributed to Murugan’s direct protection.
Vaikasi Visakam — The Sacred Birthday
Celebrated when the full moon of Vaikasi month coincides with Visakha nakshatra, Vaikasi Visakam marks the divine birthday of Lord Murugan. This festival is grandly celebrated at Maha Rajyam Temple with special abhishekam, processions and all-day worship.
